An important question in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram is that of a critical end point of chiral symmetry breaking. Some insight can be gained by studying an effective nucleon-meson model. In particular, for large chemical potentials, within that model the line of chemical freeze-out shows no indications of a chiral phase transition. To extend the model, fluctuations can be included via the functional renormalization group.
