Compton Scattering and the Nucleon Polarisabilities
The nucleon polarisabilities are properties of the nucleon which influence many areas of physics, from determining the size of the proton, to investigating the structure of neutron stars. The polarisabilities, and their study via Compton Scattering are well studied in theory, but experimentally problematic, due to the very small cross sections involved. In recent years, with improvement in experimental facilities, a new wave of Compton Scattering experiments has begun, which requires close collaboration between experimentalists and theorists to ensure the best application of both experimental and theoretical efforts. I will provide an overview of the current status and future perspectives.
