Nuclear Collectivity in the Shell Model Monte Carlo Approach

We discuss recent applications of the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) approach in the rare earth region to describe the crossover from vibrational to rotational collectivity in the framework of the interacting shell model. We identify a microscopic signature of the crossover at low-temperatures. We
also calculate the total state densities and define a collective enhancement factor from the ratio of the total state density to the intrinsic state density as calculated in the finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. We find that damping of the enhancement factors are associated with the pairing and shape transitions occuring in these nuclei. We also present most recent total and spin/parity-projected SMMC level density calculations in the Ni region.
